Senate Kills Effort to Repeal Net Neutrality

The Senate voted 52-46 to reject a Republican-led effort to reverse the FCC's new net neutrality guidelines, which will prevent Internet providers from blocking or slowing rivals' content.

The White House had suggested that President Obama would veto the resolution if it reached his desk.

Chris Keyser, president of the Writers Guild of America West, which has been the most vocal of all of the unions in support of the FCC's new rules, issued this statement: “We applaud the U.S. Senate for protecting an open Internet and rejecting the attack on the FCC’s Net Neutrality rules.  These regulations provide important safeguards for free speech, competition, innovation, and consumer choice.  The Web is far too important a public resource to hand over to a few powerful corporations.”

Verizon is challenging the net neutrality rules in federal court.
