Afternoon Briefs: Cain's Hollywood Support

With another accuser coming forward today, Herman Cain's press conference seems to have done little to stop daily drip of news coverage of allegations of sexual harassment. Andrew Sullivan thinks he's given the story major new life, and others think that, by agreeing to take a lie detector test, he handled the press conference like a reality television star would. The candidate can at least take solace in the fact that he's not the only one that thinks that too many people in the media are "downright dishonest."

"I believe that the character and integrity of a candidate should come under a microscope, with facts, not accusations," Cain said at his press conference.

After he went on "The Jimmy Kimmel Show" last night, Herman Cain spoke before the Hollywood conservative org Friends of Abe. I'm told the event was full, and the candidate did not say much about the sexual harassment charges, other than that they would be addressed at his press conference today. Such entertainers as Dennis Miller and "Justified"'s Nick Searcy have been publicly supporting Cain, while a sizable number of industry conservatives had been enthusiastic about his prospects as an alternative to Mitt Romney. Now there's a sense of wait and see. Miller sent a Tweet on Tuesday, "I'll vote for anybody who goes up against Barack Obama. Unless it's Joe Biden."

After watching the Cain press conference today, LA Observed's Mark Lacter compares Cain to Lonesome Rhodes, the small-town drifter who becomes a national media sensation in "A Face in the Crowd."

Capitol Hill Cosponsors: The Sunlight Foundation Reporting Group says that Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas), chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, has received nearly $393,000 from show biz sources, while Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) has collected nearly $300,000. Smith introduced a major piece of anti-piracy legislation last month, while Klobuchar is one of the key champions of a new law to make unauthorized streaming for commercial gain a felony.

Occupy With Crosby and Nash: Graham Nash and David Crosby are the latest musicians to turn out at Occupy Wall Street. On Tuesday, they showed up and played an acoustic concert, with songs including "Teach Your Children" and "Long Time Gone."
