Former Obama Speechwriter Lands White House Sitcom

Jon Lovett, who left the White House during the summer to pursue a screenwriting career, is now onboard an NBC pilot called "1600 Penn," about a dysfunctional first family.

As Variety's Andrew Wallenstein points out, networks have a better track record at White House dramas than comedies, one of the more notorious of the lattter being the Lincoln-era sitcom "The Secret Diary of Desmond Pfieffer."

"Modern Family" director Jason Winer and "Book of Mormon" star Josh Gad also are attached as executive producers.
