Jane Fonda on Health Care Fallout

That, and other news, in today's Roundup and Recap.

Jane Fonda takes on the Stupak/Pitts amendment in the House version of the the health care reform bill that passed on Saturday, reflecting a growing rift from progressives as the Senate weighs the legislation.

Fonda writes on her blog, "People are often surprised that we are still fighting this battle for freedom of choice after so long. I’m not. I’ve come to understand that anti-choice and opposition to contraception has nothing to do with pro-life or pro-fetus; it has everything to do with power and who has it. It represents a mindset that values women mainly for their services as wives and sexual partners to men and as producers and rearers of children."

Fonda has been a prolific contributor and supporter of pro-choice groups and women's rights advocates.

Generation for Change, the newly formed org that is throwing its weight behind Jerry Brown's gubernatorial candidacy, is holding an environmentally themed event next week timed to the UN Climate Change Conference taking place in Copenhagen in December. The ticket sales at the Nov. 17 event at Bouelvard 3 benefit the Road to Copenhagen campaign launched by Environment America Research and Policy Center. Mix Master Mike will perform. Update: The event is being organized by the Generation for Change Foundation, not Generation for Change, which is holding an event for Jerry Brown on Nov. 19. Same group, different tax status.

Tom Ford, in the midst of a publicity tour for "A Single Man," talks about same-sex marriage in The Advocate and wonders if the movement has gotten too caught up in the word "marriage" versus the rights for a civil partnership. He says, "Getting hung up with the semantics derails the cause we’re all fighting for."

Surya Yalamanchili, once a contestant on NBC's "The Apprentice" (and fired by Donald Trump) is running as an independent for the Ohio congressional seat held by Rep. Jean Schmidt, a Republican. CQ Politics reports that Schmidt is somewhat vulnerable. The reality star says, “Having been on a reality TV show and having been behind the scenes of it, it’s very representative of the current state of Democratic and Republican party politics."
