"Outrage": New Doc to Expose Closeted D.C. Politicos

20090409_outrage_190x190 Debuting at this year's Tribeca Film Festival on April 24 is a new documentary sure to create some turbulence --- which is kind of the name of the game in the hypercompetitive nonfiction film biz. In fact, its distributor even promises that "Outrage" "could be a game changer in the ongoing battle for same sex civil rights in the United States.”

The film, according to a story on IndieWire, "aims to tell stories that haven't ever been reported on." Thec director is Kirby Dick, who raised hackles with the MPAA with his 2006 expose "This Film Is Not Yet Rated."

What is uncertain is exactly who will be featured, whether they will be named, and, if so, how they'll respond. Among those interviewed are Representatives Barney Frank and Tammy Baldwin, as well as former New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey, all of whom are out of the closet, But others are being kept under wraps.

IndieWire says its reporters "recently watched an unfinished cut of the film and we have agreed to refrain from detailing certain aspects of the film, and some of those who may depicted in it, because the documentary was at a work-in-progress stage and is subject to change prior to its debut in two weeks at the Tribeca Film Festival. One person closely involved with the making of the movie recently told Indiewire that the reporting and vetting of individual storylines will continue up until the last minute to make it as timely and airtight as possible."

The executive producer of the pic is Hollywood-based political consultant Chad Griffin, who was an adviser to the No on 8 campaign last year.

“We’re prepared for [the controversy], this is explosive territory,” filmmaker Kirby Dick told IndieWire yesterday by phone. “These closeted people make a decision early on, and they have decades of lies that have kept their lives under wraps. One of the reasons we made this film is that the closet distorts our whole political situation. The press doesn’t report on this - [they are] very reluctant.”

If the film does eventually identify closeted politicos, it is sure to also ignite some debate about outing in the press and the media.

The poster for the pic, above, was unveiled today.
