The Latest Column: "Milk" and Prop 8

Milkfirstlookew As same-sex marriage advocates pursue their efforts to overturn Proposition 8, California's ban on same-sex marriage, could ``Milk'' provide a roadmap?

The Focus Features biopic of gay civil rights icon Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected official, is prescient - to some inspirational; to others reminders of what went wrong in fighting the ballot initiative.

That's the subject of my latest column in the print edition of weekly Variety, and you can read it here.

The New York Times also looks at the "Milk"-Prop 8 connection here, including details on one group's effort to boycott Cinemark Theatres, where Focus plans some screenings of the movie. Their Nomilkforcinemark .com calls for a boycott, just as Milk himself helped lead a boycott of Coors beer 30 years ago. Cinemark's CEO, Alan Stock, made contributions to the Yes on 8 campaign.
