Clooney is "U.N. Messenger of Peace"

Secretary-General Ban ki-moon named Clooney to his position to "help promote global awareness of the world body's activities especially in its far-flung peacekeeping missions."

Clooney has been out front in campaigning for an end to war in Darfur and in pushing for humantarian aid for refugees caught in he conflict. He'll become the ninth U.N. peace envoy.

Clooney has endorsed Barack Obama, but he's been reluctant to campaign for him, fearing that he will prove a detriment lest it give the candidate's campaign too much of a Hollywood elitist sheen. And in focusing on Darfur, Clooney has risen above the more partisan confrontations that he's gotten into in the past.
