Who's Giving: The Latest Rundown
Hillary Clinton led all candidates in fund-raising, and she has certainly collected endorsements and contributions from a long list of boldfaced names.
Although Clinton may again lead entertainment industry fund-raising when figures are compiled later this week, the entertainment industry is still spreading its wealth among multiple candidates.
Third quarter figures show that the entertainment industry was still being tapped rather aggressively by the campaigns, with Oprah Winfrey hosting the much-publicized fund-raiser for Barack Obama, Magic Johnson for Clinton and "Desperate Housewives" star James Denton for John Edwards. And second-tier candidates like Bill Richardson, with key Hollywood supporters like agent Mitch Kaplan, continue to draw contributions.
Nevertheless, giving wasn't as brisk as in other quarters, perhaps because of the summer months and perhaps becasue many donors are maxing out.
Among the donors giving to '08 contenders for the first time were Sumner Redstone, Jon Bon Jovi, Vivica Fox and Renee Zellweger, who each gave to Clinton; Winfrey, Forest Whitaker, Sidney Poitier and Tyler Perry, who gave to Obama; and Russell Simmons and Sean Penn, who gave to Edwards. Penn also gave to Dennis Kucinich. Bette Midler contributed to Obama and Clinton, having given to Bill Richardson earlier in the year.
On the Republican side, "Law & Order" star Fred Thompson, the new entrant into the race, has yet to fully tap into the base of potential Hollywood support, although he did receive a contribution from "Law & Order" creator Dick Wolf.
What's also noteworthy are those who have yet to give --- politically active industry figures like Warren Beatty, Jane Fonda and Robert Redford. Matt Damon and Ben Affleck have indicated their support for Obama, but records show they've yet to write checks.
Here's a rundown of selected donors and where they've channeled their money (with the quarter of their contributions):
