Stumping for "Sicko"

Michael Moore testified at an informational briefing today in Sacramento hosted by Sen. Sheila Kuehl, but it was like preaching to the converted. The dozen or saw lawmakers there all were advocates of a single-payer health care system.

Rather, it was a pretty well-calibrated publicity windfall for his film "Sicko," which takes aim at the healthcare system and the insurance industry.

"I'd like to see executives of these companies in a perp walk in handcuffs," Moore said.

Moore acknowledged that the event, which was followed by a rally and screening, will help publicize the film.

Asked during a news conference if he was worried the film might be used by Democratic politicians to promote their agenda, Moore replied, "I thought it was the other way around."

I just watched a screening of Sicko and I believe it will be difficult for anyone who watches, regardless of their political leanings, not to be moved. No informed individual could advocate for maintaining a broken market based system that waists over 31% of health care dollars on administration while the best example of single payer in the US, Medicare, only cost us 3% in administration? While the number one cause of personal bankrupts in this county is unpaid medical bills, and insured Americans are denied care to increase the profits of HMOs. Our sickening for profit health care system is the biggest drag on our economy. If you are so morally blind that you are able to ignore the imperative of covering America’s families, than at least admit that it makes simple economic sense. As for individual choice, if you have an HMO you go to their hospital, under single payer you choose your hospital and your doctor. Don’t let an HMO come between you and your doctor, choose single payer.
