Paul Newman: Bush is America's "Biggest Internal Threat"

Paul Newman stepped back into the political fray with a fund-raising letter for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

Anne Schroeder of The Politico reports that Newman is making an appeal for support for the dems toi retain Congress, accusing Republicans of "scare-mongering" and at the same time writing that "one seat is all that separates Republicans from retaking the United States Senate."

Newman writes, "I am proud now to stand with a new generation of Democrats against a president who poses what I believe to be the biggest internal threat  to American democracy in my lifetime."

Newman, of course, has a long history in Democratic politics. He was a big supporter of Eugene McCarthy in 1968 (he's pictured at a fund-raiser that year), and noptes that it helped land him on Nixon's enemies list.

“It was one of my life's proudest achievements. More than the films, more than the awards — finding out that I was on Nixon's Enemies List meant that I was doing something right."
