Imus Provides Hillary With Dot Com Fodder
Given what Don Imus said about she and her husband --- when they were in the room --- at the 1996 Radio and Television Correspondents Assn. Dinner, there was no question that Hillary Clinton would steer clear of the radio and MSNBC host embroiled in his latest controversy.
But her campaign now is posting a photo of the Rutgers Women's Basketball Team, asking that supporters send them an e-mail to them as a message of respect and support. It certainly is an interesting twist in 08ers attempts to draw people in to their website, trying to elevate them to something that appears more than a promotional tool. Here users are getting involved in an issue that is at best incidental to the major issues of the campaigns.
"Don Imus's comments about them were nothing more than small-minded bigotry and coarse sexism," Clinton wrote. "They showed a disregard for basic decency and were disrespectful and degrading to African Americans and women everywhere."
In 1996, Imus riffed on Hillary Clinton's involvement in the Whitewater scandal. As the audience laughed, she sure didn't. And nor did her husband.
She told ABC News recently, "I've never wanted to go on his show and I certainly don't ever intend to go on his show, and I felt that way before his latest outrageous, hateful, hurtful comments."
