Primary Pocketbook: Who's Giving

Presidential contenders are just starting to make their way through industry circles to raise money for their White House bids, but most have been fielding support from Hollywood for quite some time.

Virtually every presidential prospect has a Leadership PAC and has been raising money quite actively over the past two years. The money that they collect for these PACs cannot be used for their presidential runs, but it can be used to pay for travel across the country, and to give to other candidates. That creates good will among, say, Joe Biden and James Webb. Biden raised money through his Leadership PAC and then gave money to Webb's Senate campaign in Virginia. And because Biden's PAC boosted Webb's campaign coffers, maybe some day Webb be able to return the favor, especially if Biden gets in the race.

Just because donors give to a politician's Leadership PAC doesn't mean that they will support that politico's run for President. Lorne Michaels and Edgar Bronfman Jr., for instance, each gave to multiple politicians' PACs. But their contributions may indicate future support, and at the very least means that they like that person enough to write a check.

Here is a rundown of much of the Hollywood and media giving to these Leadership PACs over the past two years, collected from records compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics, the Federal Election Commission and the IRS.
